Meeting Notes

Many thanks to all the parents and grandparents who cam to the meeting tonight. As requested by one of the parents these are the notes regarding how to help with maths learning and the link for the information leaflet.

None of this should be written down, we will concentrate on the formal methods within school. Please keep everything practical.

Maths Home Learning

How you can help?

·        Number Bonds  

o   The children need to be confident in recognising number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 (this is only counting in multiples of 10).

How you can help?

·        Whilst out and about look at numbers in the environment, such as road signs, door numbers or car number plates. What would you add to these to make 10 or 20? If these numbers are multiples of 10 (end in a zero), what would you add to make 100?

·        ADDITiON AND SUBTRACTION 

o   The children need to be confident in adding single digit numbers, adding a single digit to a two digit number, counting on in multiples of 10.

How you can help?

·        In the car, walking the dog or shopping look at numbers around you. Quick fire questions… what is 3 + 5? If I add or subtract 10/20/30 etc… from this number what do I get? They might even remind you that the units number never changes!  What do you get if you count on 5 from 78? Encourage the children to use their number bonds but also counting on using their fingers.

  

·        Multiplication and division 

o   The children need to be able to recite their 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables.

How you can help?

·        Multiplication - Again this is one when you are out and about! Find a single digit number multiply it by 2, 5 and 10. Encourage the children to use their fingers. E.g. 4 x 5 = ? each finger is worth 5 so they hold up 4 fingers and count in 5s. The children need to know that multiplication can be done in any order.

·        Division – using buttons, bead, sweets or pasta at tea! Share a certain amount into groups of 2, 5 or 10. For example share 15 buttons into groups of 5 is the same as 15 ÷ 5 =

·        Time, Shape and money   

o   The children need to tell the time to o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. They need to recognise both 2D and 3D shapes.

How you can help?

·        Time – a simple one! Using both an analogue and digital clock children need to tell the time! This can be done anywhere!

·        Shape – this time of year is perfect for identifying 3D and 2D shapes with all the lovely gift boxes and chocolates that are on sale! Can children recognise the number of sides, faces and vertices? Do they have lines of symmetry, can they roll? Have fun with what you find.

·        Money – with technology today this one is becoming harder to teach. If you have a penny jar or anytime you do pay with notes or coins, ask the children to help you. Can they make totals using coins? Play shops and just see money in everyday life.

These are guidelines and are certainly not a comprehensive list! Please do not put pressure on the children, these are just questions and activities that can be built into everyday life. You do not need to record anything because if the children can’t talk about it they can’t write about it!
